How Much Yarn Do I Need for a Blanket?
Blanket size alone cannot reveal yarn use. Stitch density, hook size, yarn construction, tension, and finishing all matter. A measured swatch turns your actual fabric into a defensible starting point.
Why generic charts vary
A chart averages projects that may use different stitches and yarn weights. Two blankets with identical dimensions can have very different fabric density. Use a chart for an early budget; use your own swatch before buying a full quantity.
Scale yarn by area
Area ratio = blanket area ÷ swatch area
Likely yarn = swatch yarn × area ratio
This assumes the sampled fabric continues across the blanket body. If the blanket uses several stitch sections, calculate representative sections separately or choose a wider uncertainty range.
Keep uncertainty separate from buying buffer
Uncertainty describes how closely the swatch may predict the finished fabric. A planning buffer is an additional choice made after the high estimate. Keeping them separate prevents one unexplained percentage from looking more precise than it is.
- ±5%: large, close-match sample and stable construction
- ±10%: normal planning for a representative sample
- ±20%: small sample, changing tension, or unsampled construction
Buy whole skeins with dye lots in mind
Divide the buffered high estimate by the amount in one skein, then round upward. Consider retailer returns and dye-lot availability before choosing a buffer. Buying one extra skein can be sensible when a matching lot will be difficult to replace, but it should remain a visible decision.
