Crochet Blanket Yarn Estimate Examples
These examples keep the likely use, uncertainty range, purchasing buffer, and whole-skein rounding visible as separate steps.
Example 1: throw blanket measured in yards
Target: 50 × 60 in. Swatch: 4 × 4 in using 12 yd. Normal uncertainty: ±10%. Buffer: 10%. One skein: 220 yd.
- Area ratio: (50 × 60) ÷ (4 × 4) = 187.5.
- Likely yarn: 12 × 187.5 = 2,250 yd.
- Range: 2,250 × 0.90 to 2,250 × 1.10 = 2,025–2,475 yd.
- Purchase basis: 2,475 × 1.10 = 2,722.5 yd.
- Whole skeins: 2,722.5 ÷ 220 = 12.38, rounded up to 13 skeins.
Example 2: metric estimate by weight
Target: 100 × 100 cm. Swatch: 10 × 10 cm using 8 g. Label: 100 g / 200 m. Close-match uncertainty: ±5%. Buffer: 10%. Two skeins already owned.
- Area ratio: 10,000 ÷ 100 = 100.
- Likely yarn: 8 × 100 = 800 g, equivalent to about 1,600 m.
- Range: 760–840 g.
- Purchase basis: 840 × 1.10 = 924 g.
- Whole skeins: 924 ÷ 100, rounded up = 10 to have; with two owned, 8 to buy.
Example 3: when the sample is a rough match
Suppose a small sample predicts 1,500 m for the blanket body, but your tension changed and a simple border was not sampled. Choosing ±20% makes the visible estimate 1,200–1,800 m. A 15% buying buffer uses the high estimate: 1,800 × 1.15 = 2,070 m. With 250 m per skein, round 8.28 upward to 9 skeins.
The wider range does not make the estimate worse. It makes uncertain input honest.
